Comic Book Review The Mighty Thor #5
The Big Conclusion to the First Arc
In This Issue of
What Else Happens in this Comic?
This is the giant wrap-up issue. The Mighty Thor #5 takes all the things we’ve been reading about since issue #1 and ends many of them with a bang. Like all good comics, it leaves a few dangling plotlines to pull us into the next arc. Jane and Odin have a long standing grudge, and they take it out on each other with interest paid in blood.

How is the Writing in ??
The Dialogue
I really enjoyed reading Jane’s inner monologue throughout the issue. Pay special attention to Queen Aelsa’s dialogue. It’s quick. It’s subtle, but it is so important to this issue and moving forward. Again, I heard Tom Hiddleston saying all of Loki’s lines.
Showing Versus Telling
I really enjoyed reading Jane’s inner monologue throughout the issue. Pay special attention to Queen Aelsa’s dialogue. It’s quick. It’s subtle, but it is so important to this issue and moving forward. Again, I heard Tom Hiddleston saying all of Loki’s lines.
The Vibe
Avengers: Endgame cinema is the best comparison I have for this issue. It’s big. It’s bold. Huge things happen for the single issue and for the entire series.
Comic Art Review
Russell Dauterman brought his A-game to The Mighty Thor #5. He draws the big things. He draws the little things. We have a few poster pages. During the Civil War on Asgardia, watch the background images. There’s some goofy fun stuff happening in the melee. The closing panel of the issue is a giant wow moment for Lady Thor. The angle of the primary figure in the image and the colors that Matt uses to color it and portray the sky are epic.
On the Cover
On the primary cover by Russell Dauterman, look at Lady Thor’s reflection in Odin’s gold eye patch. Excellent. Odin is so angry. The cropping works so well.
Our second cover this month is by Laura Braga, who’s also created artwork for Fantastic Four, Dazzler, Captain Marvel and many other comics.
World Building
Locations
We bounce all over the Ten Realms in the Mighty Thor #5. The Odin and Lady Thor fight happens in Earth space. We visit the battle between Cul and the other Asgardians on Asgardia. There’s a scene on Alfheim, and we wrap on Jotunheim. Our map of the World Tree grows with every storyline in the Mighty Thor.
Who's Who
- Jane Foster/Lady Thor
- Lady Freyja
- Loki
- Volstagg and the Warriors Three
- Cul Borson and the Thunder Guard
- Queen Aelsa Featherwine
- Malekith and the Dark Council
Big Question
Is Cul influencing his brother? Odin is offworld far away from Cul and his odd behavior starts to fade.
You. You wretched mallet. This is all your damn fault.
Who Will Like
Depending on how you feel about Loki will determine if you like this issue. If you like Loki as the god of evil, you’ll appreciate The Mighty Thor #5. If you like Loki as an anti-hero, you may feel let down. This comic book is an important part of Loki’s ongoing story.
I Need More Content like
In the epilogue, the Odinson returns to the Mighty Thor. If you didn’t pick it up at the time, his story was being told in The Unworthy Thor.
Without years of Marvel comics reading, this Odinson story becomes convoluted. If you aren’t a diehard the most important fact about the Unworthy Thor is he is trying to get a Mjolnir from another dimension. If he can’t lift his old hammer, maybe this new one will work for him.
Should You Buy This Comic Book?
As the final issue of the five part launch of The Mighty Thor, this issue did a great job of wrapping up all of our current plotlines. It also sets up the next arc. It's also a great stand-alone issue with key scenes for all of our favorite characters. Buy it. Buy the collected edition. It's all good.
